(marr, sumner and tennant)

now my head is spinning
at the back of my mind
i think i’m winning

i was somebody falling for one who was not
somebody tired of dreaming
now it’s already dawning that this time i’ve got
someone who won’t leave me feeling

disappointed, once more
disillusioned, encore
i could love you, for sure
so you’re not disappointed or

disenchanted, once more
disillusioned, encore
i could love you, for sure
so you’re not disappointed at all

listen, as you call my name
just one syllable said
then spoken once again

from the sound of your voice
the promise you make
you’re somebody i can believe in
someone who won’t leave me feeling

disappointed, once more
disillusioned, encore
i could love you, for sure
so you’re not disappointed or

disenchanted, once more
disillusioned, encore
i could love you, for sure
so you’re not disappointed at all

at the back of my head
i believe what you said
dreaming

disappointed, once more
disillusioned, encore
i could love you, for sure
so you’re not disappointed or

disenchanted, once more
disillusioned, encore
i could love you, for sure
so you’re not disappointed at all

disappointed

neil tennant joins electronic for yet another classic. this was actually composed a good eight months before it became the group’s second and last top 10 hit in july 1992 (with tennant promoted to “official” third member on the sleeve), and was played live during the group’s december 1991 dates. the song was given its title when tennant heard the music marr and sumner had written (based on a piano riff by marr’s brother) and was reminded of mylène farmer’s recent hit désenchantée, which he nominated as the song he “fell in love to” in a 1999 interview with randee dawn.

tennant: “the last time we toured, i met someone and fell in love with him, and we were touring in europe and kept hearing this record. so i bought the album, and i liked it so much that the following year i made a record with electronic called ‘disappointed’, and it includes the line disappointed once more, disenchanted, encore. my little tribute to mylène farmer.” the original mix by electronic is great but actually sounds more like a remix, and the 7" version by stephen hague is just about superior, with its melodic intro establishing the momentum early on. a magnificent way to end the first chapter of the electronic story.
