(sumner, marr)
it’s a perfect situation
i’m trying hard to understand
you make my life a celebration
and then you never let me down
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
you got me hanging on a string
i find it hard to turn the other cheek
you know it doesn’t mean a thing
i could be through with you within a week
it’s a perfect situation
i’m trying hard to understand
is it still infatuation
between a woman and a man?
there never was a minute on my own
i never felt i needed anyone
it’s a perfect situation
i can’t hope to understand
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no
if you want to go, i just can’t say no

the contradicting words of this melodically irresistible song bridge the suppressed anxiety in get the message and some distant memory, while some extended synth patterns add colour to what is otherwise a strictly disciplined lp. like reality and the patience of a saint, it is one of the most subtly textured songs on the orange album, with a percussive momentum that was highlighted when played live as an instrumental in 1990.
johnny marr: “[try all you want] had some really great guitar on it. but at the end of the day i took it off, and that’s the only time i’ve ever done that. the track was more radical without it. i didn’t want to just play guitar for the sake of it. with dance music, once you introduce the human element you lose the essence of what it is — machines and relentless energy.”
