(marr and sumner)

early morning, with a sigh
she opens both her eyes
praying for a safe return
lost in the darkest night

this day the jury has adjourned
her love has taken flight
she is coming home to visit me tonight
she is coming home to visit me tonight

taken from the arms of another
woken from the deepest dream
patiently she waits for her lover
perhaps her life is not what it seemed

come to me and see my endeavour
like a leaf she falls to the ground
in the dust that gathers forever
we are spirits making no sound

she is coming home to visit me tonight
she is coming home to visit me tonight

taken from the arms of another
woken from the deepest dream
patiently she waits for her lover
perhaps her life is not what it seemed

raise the pressure

like everything else on raise the pressure this track is full of subtle guitar hooks and nimble synth jabs. the false ending provides some space from the otherwise dense production, while the get the message drum fill makes a welcome return and the middle eight is classic sumner, musically as well as lyrically. the words have no apparent discernible substance, but according to a 1996 interview with blah blah blah it’s actually about a murderer. sumner: “i attempted to get inside their mind, to study their conscience after they’ve killed someone.” whatever you say, bernard. .
