(electronic)
fate just took a wrong turn
it would appear that we don’t agree
and without warning or sign i stopped just in time
when you ran straight in front of me
well i don’t listen to the rumours
and i don’t care who you have for tea
i think you’ll find that the thief commits the crime
at the end of the book, you’ll see
you tore me right down, you’ve got a hold on me
i can’t believe it’s true, but i believe in me
it’s been so long, it’s been so long
don’t ever talk to strangers
you never know what they’re gonna say
and it may be a surprise when in front of your eyes
they get up and they walk away
so the next time you see me listen
’cause i’ve got something i want to say
you’ve got the wrong attitude and you act like a fool
and you will pass by within a day
you tore me right down, you’ve got a hold on me
i can’t believe it’s true, but i believe in me
you tore me right down, you’ve got a hold on me
i can’t believe it’s true, it’s just the end of time
you tore me right down, you’ve got a hold on me
i can’t believe it’s true, but i believe in me
you tore me right down, you’ve got a hold on me
i can’t believe it’s true, but i believe in me
it’s been so long, it’s been so long
it’s been so long, it’s been so long
it’s been so long

twisted tenderness

this plaintive song has a thinner, more acoustic sound than the tracks on twisted tenderness, but makes the case for a compilation all by itself—if whoever utters the line “all this fucking noise, man, it makes me cry” at the end of the song is responding to the wounded beauty of this overlooked b-side then he’s well within his rights. the fact that this song appeared on a single which was barely released illustrates the high quality marr and sumner maintained throughout their eleven-year partnership: sometimes it takes repeated listenings to get past the more discursive elements in their songs to find the consistency, but the secret is contained in the incredible single tracks which plotted the points between albums.
